Book launch: Public Service Futures: Welfare States in the Digital Age

23rd April from 6PM (Brussels time) / 5PM (UK time)

The FEPS-FABIANS book on “Public Service Futures: Welfare States in the Digital Age” contains a collection of essays that take stock of Europe’s public services and consider their future of the next 10 to 15 years. How can we ensure all citizens benefit from a social safety net? How do we get to a carbon-neutral state?

In these times of crisis, it is heartening to see the shared purpose with which millions of professionals provide care and support to those who need it: Europe’s welfare states are crucial. At the same, the virus challenges the resilience and adaptability of our public services. It exposes the vulnerabilities, the lack of coverage, resources and coordination, due to years of cost-cutting and fragmentation.

While public services need to be better at discharging their enduring responsibilities, they also need to respond to new and emerging challenges, including the need for sustainability, rising inequality, ageing populations, and the potentials and pitfalls of new technology. Therefore, it’s high time to rethink they way we conceive of and deliver public services.
