Inequalities and the European Semester

2nd July 2020 - 10.00-12.00

Following the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights and the efforts to include the monitoring of its implementation in the European Semester, we have seen some positive developments in the attention given to social issues in the country specific recommendations. However, despite the introduction of the social scoreboard in the European Semester Process, social inequalities (including socioeconomic inequalities, access to social services, education, regional inequalities, employment rights, etc.), which are covered by the 3rd principle on equality of opportunity, remain neglected in the process and its outcomes.

This seminar will bring together policy-makers and experts in the field of European social policy to discuss the forthcoming publication Inequalities in the European Semester, by Dr. Lorenza Antonucci and Dr. Francesco Corti, to work towards concrete policy recommendations to better address social inequalities in European economic governance. It is co-organised by FEPS, SOLIDAR, Foundation Nenni, Progresiva and Kalevi Sorsa foundation.

This meeting aims at fostering exchanges of ideas around policy proposals in the areas identified in the programme. The first part of the seminar is dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the research’s progress. In a second time, three guided discussions will aim at gathering inputs on the policy areas (Taxation, macroeconomic, social employment). This seminar will help to identify potential solutions and with the formulation of recommendations for the final paper.
