The EU and migration: Managing flows, overcoming divisions
On the eve of a summer that once again could prove difficult due to the intensification of the landings in the South of Italy and the long desperate travels of migrants in the Balkans, in the aftermath of the European Council of 28-29 June where an agreement on a sustainable migration policy is planned to be discussed the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and the Fondazione Italianieuropei organise a conference, to be held in Rome on 12th July, aimed at analysing the critical aspects of a continental strategy for the management of the migration crisis from a political, juridical and social point of view. While evaluating the single national strategies put in place to address the issue, the discussion will focus mainly on aspects closely related to the European dimension: the prospects for a reform of the Dublin Regulation, strengthening of action on the external border through ad hoc agreements, such as the EU-Turkey one in March 2016, and the creation of a European Border and Coast Guard.
