It took a pandemic to realise that we depend on care. Despite the clapping, women 70% of the care workforce, continue to work in precarious conditions, unpaid or not paid at all! It's time to#Care4Care

FEPS together with its member foundations, has been intensively working since November 2019 to monitor the EU gender equality policy agenda through a progressive lens focusing particularly on its care dimensions.

Fiscal Rules

Among the different actions taken by the European Commission in the aftermath of the pandemic, the suspension of the fiscal rules may represent a change as big and as relevant as the much more acclaimed Next Generation EU. Several governments have already hinted that they don’t wish to go back to the same rules, once – in 2023 – the economic outlook recovers. Then, what is the way to go? Which rules need adapting?

What is the strategy to attain meaningful changes to the E(M)U economic governance?

FEPS intends to kick off a debate that is likely going to be with us for quite some time, as it touches the core of the EU’s economic integration and the level of trust between member states. It is a tough nut to crack!

Climate Investment

A fiscally sustainable public investment initiative in Europe  to prevent climate collapse

The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), the Renner Institut and the Austrian Chamber of Labour (AK) started their collaboration on a research project entitled 'A fiscally sustainable public investment initiative in Europe to prevent climate collapse' in 2019.

The research aims to pursue three objectives:

• Are the planned measures laid out in the European Commission’s Green Deal roadmap enough to meet the Paris targets?
• Are publicly-funded climate infrastructure investment initiatives fiscally sustainable?
• What is the revenue potential of a European wealth tax to fund climate action?

Child Union

Even before the pandemic, 23 million children in the EU were at risk of poverty and social exclusion. The pandemic has further exacerbated children inequality and it is now time for the European Union to act. On the occasion of the World Children’s Day more than 300 prominent figures from the world of politics, academia and civil society joined a Call to demand a rapid entry into force of the European Child Guarantee and a > Next Generation EU funding that truly works for Europe’s next generations.

Gender Based Violence

On the occasion of the 25th of November marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and the Fondation Jean Jaurès join forces to publish a series of publications authored by gender equality experts and civil society representatives to shed light on specific dimensions of gender-based violence and to foster a debate on how to fight it.

1 in 5 women have been victim of maltreatment during childhood and 1 in 3 women have suffered physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime (according to UN Women and WHO). Gender-based violence is both the cause and result of gender inequality.

United for

FEPS UNited for… conferences, have been held since 2018 in New York ahead of the United Nations General Assembly. The main objective of this yearly initiative is to discuss, with international high level policymakers, experts and academics, the most important international issues at stake. The 2020 edition will explore how to achieve a new, fair and inclusive multilateralism. Previous editions have focused on migration and climate justice.
In 2019, FEPS was honoured to be granted Special Consultative Status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the highest status granted by the UN to non-governmental organisations, thus allowing it to participate in the work of the UN.

Strategic Autonomy

About the Project

Does the EU have the capacity and agency to set priorities and make decisions autonomously in its external action? What are the necessary political, institutional and material steps to get there? How can strategic autonomy help the EU to face the challenges within and beyond European borders?

FEPS Covid Response

Europe is confronted with an unprecedented global health crisis. It is already clear that the human and economic cost of this COVID-19 outbreak will be massive. European institutions as well as some member states have promptly put forward some measures that clearly signal the need for a strong public-led strategy for a fast recovery of the European people and economy. 

At this moment, policy-making requires support and ideas to design further responses that can meet the scale of the problem. FEPS contributes to this reflection with policy ideas, analysis of the different proposals and open-reflections with the new series of FEPS COVID Response Papers and the FEPS COVID Response Webinars, which you can find below.

Call to Europe

Since its first edition in 2011, Call to Europe has become the signature conference of FEPS and a reference point for the progressive family in Europe. This is due to its capacity of bringing together a unique multi-stakeholder community of progressive politicians, civil society and media to discuss issues of common concern and develop concrete and positive responses to contemporary European challenges in the most interactive and inclusive way.

The name Call to Europe stems from FEPS core mission of bridging the gap.
