Regional Security in the Middle East: The Quest for De-confliction Mechanisms

Closed-door online event; 14:30 - 16:00 CEST

This seminar aims at fostering a debate between experts and scholars, on the one hand, and policy-makers and practitioners, on the other, on key issues revolving around the need for and the process to launch regional security mechanisms to address current challenges in the Middle East and particularly the Persian Gulf.

Throughout the seminar, we will discuss prospects and challenges facing the articulation and implementation of regional security mechanisms in the Middle East. Starting from the analysis of the growing tensions in the region – the Middle East at large, with particular emphasis on the Gulf sub-region – the roundtable will examine principles and pillars that could inform such regional security mechanisms; their format and modus operandi; and the confidence-building measures that could accompany such efforts.

Held in the framework of the ongoing research project “Fostering a New Security Architecture in the Middle East”, the event is organised by the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) in cooperation with the Italian International Affairs Institute (IAI), and with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).

Research findings from the project will be published in an edited volume in the coming weeks.
