The EU, Brexit and the future of the UK election – what are the prospects for Britain and can Europe become more cohesive?

The UK’s 2016 referendum on EU membership posed fundamental questions for both Britain and the EU. On the one hand, governments in London have struggled to bring the country together and establish a tangible strategy for the UK’s future EU relationship. On the other, the Brexit vote has fuelled ongoing European debate on the future of the integration process, even though the institutions and member states have perhaps never been as united as while facing the Brexit negotiations.

In the UK there has been continuing political deadlock and growing public division and mobilisation. This has led to two withdrawal agreements stalling in parliament, a change of prime minister and now another general election. The UK Labour party has also faced uncertainty but has slowly grown more resistant to Brexit and is now calling for a second referendum.

Against this backdrop what are the possible trajectories and prospects for the UK and also for the Labour party as the December election nears? Is Labour ready to take on the responsibility of government, and will it win sufficient support - or does it require time to renew and rebuild? How should the rest of the EU respond to what happens next in Britain?
