The ANC after the Local Government Elections of 3rd August 2016

October 21, 2016
Author: Arnold Wehmhoerner

Two months after what some commentators called “disastrous” local government elections for the ANC the party hasn’t come out with clear analyses of its defeat and subsequent decisions concerning its leadership or policies. The party lost Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Port Elizabeth to coalition governments under the leadership of the Democratic Alliance (DA). In Cape Town the DA even won a two third majority. The important urban centres are out of control of the ANC and the opposition has the chance to prove its administrative skills in order to create a favourable platform for the national elections 2019.
